Morning guided tour of St. Peter's - the center of the Roman Catholic faith. A shrine was erected on the site of St. Peter's tomb in the 2nd century and the first great basilica was completed around AD 349. By the 15th century, it was in such decay that Pope Julius II laid the first stone for the new church. More than a century later, and with the aid of the great architects of the Roman Renaissance, St. Peter's was completed. Marvel at the Dome which was designed by Michelangelo, though not finished in his lifetime. Spend the early afternoon in the Vatican Gardens - which date back to medieval times. Evening private tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Dinner on your own this evening. Overnight Rome.

This morning you travel south for a guided visit of ancient Pompeii nestled under Mount Vesuvius which erupted in AD 79. See the Temple of Apollo, Bath Houses, and much more. Continue to Sorrento for an included lunch with free time to enjoy this town of pastel houses, brilliant flowers, and sea-scented air. Return to Rome for dinner on your own. Overnight Rome.
